It doesn't take long to figure out how Yonel got so good at wakeboarding at such a young age if you know who his older brother is. Yonel's older brother, Julian, turned pro in 2006 and has helped Yonel improve his wakeboarding skills every step of the way. Yonel grew up in Orlando, FL and learned to wakeboard at Orlando Watersports Complex when he was only three years old. He grew up in a very strict Jewish family as the youngest of five playing many different sports but none of them ever took priority over wakeboarding.
While some brothers dislike riding together due to their competitiveness or jealousness of the other, Julian and Yonel two embrace it. Julian has been supporting Yonel since the beginning and continues to do so today. The two are best friends and spend as much time as they can with eachother on and off the water. Yonel is currently enrolled at Olympia High School in Orlando, FL as a sophomore which makes it tough being a proefessional athlete as the Cohen family strongly values education over athletics. This means Yonel sometimes has to miss major wakeboard competitions. Despite this, Yonel has already made a name for himself winning US Nationals and Plastic Playground in 2014 as well as becoming first rider to land a 1080 all eight different ways (HS FS, HS BS, TS FS, TS BS, SW HS FS, SW HS BS, SW TS FS and SW TS BS).
