Matty was born in Proserpine, QLD, Australia and grew up in Cairns. At a young age he was always very active, playing every sport he could find until he learned to wakeboard at age 14. His parents encouraged him to pursue something he was passionate about, so wakeboarding was where he put all of his effort. Matty learned to ride at Cairns Wake Park and looked up to riders such as Scott Mcbriar and Sam "Bobbo" Colliins. He attended St. Augustine's all boys school for two years before transferring to St. Andrew High School but left half way through year 11 to pursue a professional wakeboarding career. In 2010 Matty signed a contract with CTRL and has since made his mark in wakeboarding by becoming the first rider to land a HS BS 1080 and a nose-grab toe back 9. In 2013 Matty won The Wake Park World Championships in Abu Dhabi.

Matty is also known for being in a relationship with long-time girlfriend and professional wakeboarder, Angelika Schriber. The two have been together since 2010.
