Moomba Masters it the first major boat event of the season as well as the first stop of the Nautique Wake Series. What makes this event so exciting this year is this event marks the return of legendary Amber Wing, who missed the entire 2015 season after giving birth to her first child with fellow professional wakeboarder Dean Smith in July, a boy which they named William Robert Smith. Following the birth of their son, Dean won the first competition with William in attendance at Tokyo Pro in August, his first and only win of the season.
While William may not be old enough to understand what is going on, Moomba Masters will be the first pro wakeboard event in history in which a child has both a mother and a father competing in the pro division. Not only that, but Amber and Dean are both legends in the sport of wakeboarding. Amber was the first female to land a 720 and a 900 behind boat and also the first female to land a double-flip. Dean has been riding in the pro division for more than 12 years and last year he became the oldest rider in history to win an event at Tokyo Pro. It'll be exciting to see how these two do in their first event as a family in their home country.
Another important rider to watch will be Nic Rapa, a young rider who will be debuting in his first event of his rookie season after winning nearly every event in the Jr. Pro Men's division last year. Noah Flegel will also be back on his board who recently had shoulder surgery during the off-season to repair a torn labrum. Other riders you should never take your eyes off of are what we will be referring to as "The Big Three" - Harley Clifford, Cory Teunissen and Mike Dowdy. These three riders are arguable the most talented boat riders in the world right now and we expect them to be at each others heels the entire season. If you want to see double-flips, 1080's or another trick never before landed in competition, it will most likely be one of these riders to do it.
Last, but not least, this event marks the professional debut of 12-year-old Zahra Kell. Zahra has been dominating the amateur women's division for years now and she's finally decided to take the leap into the pro division. All eyes will certainly be on her as she will be one of the youngest (if not the youngest) female to ever compete at the professional level.
